Part-time · Knoxville, US
We’re glad you’re considering applying to become an Emerald Youth JustLead Tutor.
Since 1991, Emerald Youth Foundation has worked to support Knoxville’s youth and prepare generations of Godly community leaders. Emerald Youth has engaged more than 30,000 children and young adults in a variety of community programs over nearly three decades. Every year, Emerald Youth serves more than 3,000 children, teens and young adults in the heart of Knoxville through faith, learning and health programs.
Why do we need tutors?
Each year, students in our afterschool programs take the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Assessment to determine their academic performance levels and identify skill deficiencies they may have. Emerald Youth strives to meet students' learning needs and help address learning gaps. Past data has shown that many of our students who were paired with tutors achieved greater academic growth, which is why we need you! While with their tutor, students are able to work on specific reading and math skills with resources and content catered to their individual levels. This individualized instruction has great potential to help students make significant progress towards their learning goals and close the learning gap, helping them have the skills to be more successful and empowered. In addition, tutoring allows students to build their confidence in who they are as learners and what they are capable of. This is an opportunity for you to have a direct impact in the lives of students.
If hired, where would I work?
Tutors would be placed at one of EY’s JustLead program sites. EY’s JustLead ministry is implemented through a network of more than 18 churches and faith-based organizations (FBOs) to raise up a large number of urban youth to love Jesus Christ and become effective leaders who help renew their communities. Structured and meaningful activities (i.e. academics, health, service-learning, discipleship, etc.) take place with young people at a church and FBO to achieve this holistic vision.
What are the hours?
Tutors will work 8-10 hours per week during our summer day program hours of 9:00AM-3:00PM. Tutors should be able to work at least 3 or 4 days each week for 2-3 hours per day. Exact days and schedule per week will be determined based on candidate availability and EY students’ needs/availability.
What age group would I work with?
Tutors will be placed with 2 to 6 students who are attending either elementary or middle school. Tutors will work with students either individually or in a small group. Placement and age group will be determined based on review of candidate resume and responses to the application questions – as well as candidate availability and site need.
What is the pay?
Tutors are paid $17 per hour.
When do the positions start?
Ideally, Tutors will start in orientation and training the week of May 20th and officially begin at their assigned site locations the following week. Orientation and training will be delivered both online and in-person formats. Our first day of Summer program is may 28th. Tutoring resources and curriculum will be provided to tutors based on individual student needs.
Is there an end date?
Yes. July 19th. However, there would be an opportunity to return for the Fall 2024 semester at the discretion of the Education Specialist.
Are there any position requirements?
I’m interested, what do I do next?
Great! Please answer the application questions. We highly recommend you also attach your resume, if available. We will be in touch with you no longer than a week out from the time of application submission.
