Risto Uuk has a diverse range of work experience in the field of AI governance and policy. Risto has served as the EU Research Lead at the Future of Life Institute (FLI), leading research efforts on key issues in AI policy and regulatory action in Europe. Prior to that, they worked as a Policy Researcher at FLI, where they researched and drafted regulatory requirements for AI systems and evaluated global market trends. Risto has also been involved in AI standards development at CEN and CENELEC, working on various aspects of AI standards related to the EU AI Act. Additionally, Risto has contributed their expertise as an Expert in the Working Group on Future of Work at GPAI, conducting critical technical analyses on the impact of AI on workers and working environments. Risto has also held positions as an International Strategy Forum Fellow at Schmidt Futures and a Global Priorities Fellow at the Forethought Foundation for Global Priorities Research. Risto's research and project management skills were utilized during their time at the World Economic Forum's Global AI Council, where they worked on a white paper exploring positive visions for an AI-driven future economy. Risto has also provided research support and assistance in AI governance tasks as a Research Assistant at the Berkeley Existential Risk Initiative and as a Researcher at the European Commission/AI4EU. Additionally, Risto has been an advocate for evidence-driven interventions and impact-focused initiatives as the Founder of Effective Altruism Estonia, where they raised funding, grew the community, and supported individuals in high-impact careers.
Risto Uuk completed their Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy and Economics at Tallinn University from 2016 to 2019. Risto then pursued a Master's Degree in Philosophy and Public Policy at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) from 2019 to 2020.
