Swami Gnanashanmugam is currently working as a Cardiac Surgeon at Northwestern Medicine. Prior to this, they served as an Assistant Professor in the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University. Swami also worked as a Principal Consultant at Medical Device Consulting and founded Gradient Denervation Technologies, a medical device company. Swami also founded the Third Coast Ventilators Project. Swami has experience as a Clinical Instructor and Advanced Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Houston Methodist. Additionally, they served as a Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Fellow/Resident at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Heart Institute. Swami began their medical career as a General Surgery Resident at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and subsequently worked as a BioDesign Fellow at Stanford University.
Swami Gnanashanmugam began their education at Stanford University in 1999, where they pursued a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and also earned a minor in International Relations. Swami continued their studies at Stanford and completed a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering in 2004.
Simultaneously, from 2004 to 2008, Swami attended Northwestern University, specifically the Feinberg School of Medicine, where they obtained their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. During this time, they also pursued a Doctor of Medicine degree at Northwestern University.
After a few years, from 2011 to 2014, Swami returned to Stanford University for a specialized program, becoming a Biodesign Fellow.
