Dr. Aletha Y. Akers has a diverse work experience in various prestigious institutions. Aletha Y. started their career as an OB/GYN Resident at the University of Michigan Health System from 2000 to 2004. From 2004 to 2006, Dr. Akers served as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Aletha Y. then joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2006, where they held multiple roles including Assistant Professor, Assistant Investigator, and Site Medical Director. During their time at the University of Pittsburgh, they also served as Clinical Faculty at the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Affiliated Faculty at the Program for Research on Media and Health. In 2014, Dr. Akers joined The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as the Medical Director of Gynecology Services. Their most recent position is as the Vice President for Research at the Guttmacher Institute, starting in May 2020.
Aletha Y. Akers, MD, MPH obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Biology & Chemistry as a double major from Bryn Mawr College in 1993. In 2000, they completed their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Aletha then pursued further education, earning a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill between 2004 and 2006. In 2020, they obtained a certification on Pitching Yourself from LinkedIn, specifically from Jodi Glickman.
