Rene van Hell

Director Inclusive Green Growth, Ambassador Sustainable Development, Arctic Ambassador at Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken

Rene van Hell has extensive work experience in various government and diplomatic roles. They started their career in 1989 as an Advisor for PvdA. They then worked as a Policy Advisor at the European Parliament from 1990 to 1994. In 1994, they became a Policy Advisor at the Ministry of the Interior and remained in this role until 1999. From 1995 to 1996, they served as a First Secretary at the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the European Union. In 2000, they joined the Ministry of Economic Affairs as a Parliamentary and Political Coordinator.

In 2004, they became a Minister (Economic) at the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington, D.C., where they headed the economic division. They held this position until 2008 when they transitioned to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, serving as the Deputy Director of Trade Policy and Globalization until 2011. From 2011 to 2012, they again worked as the Director of International Enterprise at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture, and Innovation.

In 2012, they joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Director of Inclusive Green Growth, Ambassador for Sustainable Development, and Arctic Ambassador. They remained in this role until September 2021 when they became the Ambassador to Hungary. It is currently their latest position.

Rene van Hell obtained a Masters degree in Economics from the University of Amsterdam, attending from 1982 to 1988.
