AC Patterson enters his 2nd season as an NFL coach in 2020, having worked primarily with Minnesota's RBs in 2019. Patterson arrived in Minnesota after spending the previous 4 seasons coaching offense at Portland State.

Minnesota's ground game saw major improvements in 2019, as the team's RB group finished with 2,002 total rushing yards (2nd among NFL RB groups in 2019) after totaling 1,278 total rushing yards in 2018 (28th among NFL RB groups). RB Dalvin Cook and FB C.J. Ham each earned their first Pro Bowl berth after Cook finished the season with 1,654 scrimmage yards, good for 7th in the NFL in 2019. Rookie RB Alexander Mattison's 4.62 yards per carry ranked 3rd among qualifying rookies in 2019.
