Amanda Maples is the Françoise Billion Richardson Curator of African Art at the New Orleans Museum of Art since June 2023, previously serving as Curator of Global African Arts at the North Carolina Museum of Art from July 2018 to July 2023. Amanda's extensive experience includes roles as Curatorial Fellow for Arts of Africa and the Indigenous Americas at Stanford University and as a Guest Curator at the Smithsonian Institution, contributing to significant exhibitions and publications. Amanda holds a PhD in Visual Studies/African Art from the University of California, Santa Cruz, complemented by an MA in Visual Anthropology from the University of Kent and a BA in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Other notable positions include curatorial roles at Leslie Sacks Fine Art, High Desert Museum, and Yale University Art Gallery, reflecting a dedicated career in the research, curation, and presentation of African art and cultural heritage.
