James Kelley has a extensive work experience in various academic and counseling roles. James is currently serving as the Associate Vice President of Student Services at the North Carolina Community College System, a position they have held since November 2016. Prior to this, they held the role of Vice President for Student Services at Randolph Community College from January 2011 to October 2016. James also served as the Division Chair for Humanities & Social Sciences at Fayetteville Technical Community College from November 2009 to December 2010. Before these roles, James worked at Fayetteville Technical Community College as the Director of Admissions, Adjunct Instructor for Early Childhood & Humanities, and as a Counselor from 2002 to 2009. Additionally, they were an Adjunct Instructor for Psychology at Dallas Christian College from 2005 to 2008 and an Adjunct Instructor for Counseling at Webster University from 2003 to 2005. Prior to their career in academia, James served in the US Army as a Squad Leader for Parachute Rigger & Operations NCO from 1988 to 1994.

James Kelley attended several educational institutions throughout their academic career. Starting in 1982, they enrolled at Mid-South Christian College, where they did not pursue a specific degree or field of study. In 1984, they transferred to Milligan College, where they also did not complete a degree or specify a field of study. Following these experiences, James Kelley attended Johnson University from 1985 to 1991, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Bible/Biblical Studies. Subsequently, they attended Cincinnati Christian University from 1994 to 1996, earning a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Counseling. Finally, James Kelley completed their Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Child and Youth Studies - Management of Programs at Nova Southeastern University from 1999 to 2002.
