Alex Martelli began their work experience as a Systems Engineer at IBM in 1981. Alex then worked as a Staff Programmer at Cad.Lab from 1989 to 1994, followed by a role as a Staff Programmer at think3 from 1994 to 2001. In 2001, they became a Senior Systems Consultant at Open End AB and AB Strakt. Alongside these roles, they became a Fellow of the Python Software Foundation, contributing to the development and promotion of Python. In 2005, they joined Google as an Uber Tech Lead, later transitioning to the role of Senior Staff Engineer. At Google, they also held the role of Senior Staff Engineer, Cloud Tech Support from 2014 until retiring in August 2023. Throughout their career, they also acted as an expert on probabilities and combinatorics in bridge as a freelance role from 1980 to 2010. Additionally, they have been a book author for O'Reilly since 2001.
Alex Martelli completed their secondary education at Liceo Scientifico Copernico in Bologna from 1969 to 1974, obtaining a Maturita in the scientific field. Following this, Alex Martelli attended Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna from 1974 to 1980, where they obtained a Laurea degree in Ingegneria Elettronica.
