Douglas Jutte has a vast work experience in the field of public health and community development. Douglas started their career as a Pediatric Hospitalist at Pediatrix in 2002. Later, they joined the UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program, where they worked as an Academic Faculty member and advanced to the position of Associate Adjunct Professor. Douglas also served as the Associate Director of the Masters Degree in Health & Medical Sciences Program at UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program. During their time at UC Berkeley, they conducted research and published numerous peer-reviewed articles on health disparities and the role of community development in improving health.
Additionally, Jutte worked as an Adjunct Scientist at the University of Manitoba, Centre for Health Policy, where they utilized a population health research data repository to investigate the impact of social factors on health and evaluate community and policy interventions to reduce health disparities.
In 2013, Jutte founded the Build Healthy Places Network (BHPN), a national nonprofit organization that focuses on transforming the collaboration between the health, community development, and finance sectors to reduce poverty, advance racial equity, and improve health in neighborhoods across the United States. Douglas served as the Executive Director of BHPN for 10 years before becoming a Principal Investigator at the Public Health Institute (PHI), the fiscal sponsor for BHPN.
Jutte also played an active role in various nonprofit organizations, such as Purpose Built Communities and Mercy Housing, where they served as a Member of the Board of Trustees. Douglas contributed to both organizations' efforts in promoting affordable housing, healthcare partnerships, and health outcomes as essential metrics of success.
Furthermore, Jutte worked at the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General as a Senior Scientific Editor, where they co-led the development and publication of the Surgeon General's Report on Community Health & Economic Prosperity. The report aimed to emphasize the importance of private sector corporations investing in neighborhoods through the community development sector to maximize health, prosperity, and business environments.
Throughout their career, Jutte has been dedicated to advancing the field of public health, reducing health disparities, and improving community well-being.
Douglas Jutte attended Harvard Medical School from 1991 to 1996, where they earned their MD degree. Prior to that, they studied Biology and Botany at Cornell University from 1987 to 1991, earning a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. After finishing medical school, they pursued Pediatrics at Stanford University between 1996 and 2000. In 2002-2003, Jutte completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley. Finally, from 2003 to 2006, they undertook a post-doctoral fellowship in the RWJF Heath & Society Scholars program at the University of California, San Francisco, focusing on Population health and social determinants of health.
