Maya M. Bugg, Ed.D.

Maya M. Bugg, Ed.D. has a diverse work experience spanning different sectors. Maya M. started their career at the U.S. Department of Education as a Policy Consultant, where they were selected as one of the 25 Policy Fellows. In this role, they reviewed and evaluated educator resources, researched and developed a database of teacher leadership opportunities, and assessed national Parent Information Resource Center policies.

Following their time at the Department of Education, Maya served as a National Board Certified Teacher at Durham Public Schools for five years. Maya M. then founded and served as the Executive Director of UPLIFT Now!, a nonprofit organization, for four years.

Maya also worked as a Director at Citizen Schools and as a State (Executive) Director at Education Pioneers. Maya M. later founded their own consulting firm, The Bugg Consulting Group, LLC, where they currently serve as the Founder and Principal Consultant.

In addition to their consulting work, Maya is an Adjunct Professor of Public Policy in the EdD Program at Vanderbilt University. Maya M. also has experience in higher education, having served as the University Coordinator of Recruitment and Teacher Ed Initiatives at the College of Education at NC State University.

Currently, Maya holds the position of President and Chief Executive Officer at the Tennessee Charter School Center.

Maya M. Bugg, Ed.D. holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where they studied English, African American Studies, Spanish, and Education. Maya M. then pursued further education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, earning a Master's of Education (Ed.M) degree with a focus on Urban Education and Leadership. Later, they completed their Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) at Vanderbilt University, specializing in Education Policy & Organizational Leadership. Maya also obtained additional certifications, including Gifted Education K-12 from Duke University and National Board Certification- English Language Arts from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
