Scott Klein

Scott Klein has a diverse work experience spanning over several companies and roles. Scott is currently serving as the Chief Product Officer at THE CITY NY since October 2022. Before that, they were a Board Member at Muckrock since June 2018, contributing to the governance of a nonprofit journalism organization focused on open data and government accountability.

Scott spent a significant part of their career at ProPublica, starting in 2008. Scott held various roles, including Deputy Managing Editor from March 2016 to October 2022. In this position, they led teams at the intersection of journalism and technology, overseeing editorial product development and engineering. Scott also led innovative collaborative data journalism projects, such as Electionland and Documenting Hate.

Scott was the President and Co-Founder of DocumentCloud from June 2009 to August 2011. During this time, DocumentCloud revolutionized how the news industry analyzes and presents primary source documents, becoming extensively adopted by newsrooms worldwide.

Prior to their involvement with ProPublica and DocumentCloud, Scott was the VP, Web Publisher at The Nation from November 1998 to March 2008, leading product leadership and various aspects of thenation.com. Scott also worked as a Consultant and Designer at The Green Guide Institute from August 2002 to April 2004.

Scott started their career as a Consultant at Glass Bead Software in June 1998 and later became a Project Manager at New York Times Digital from June 1997 to November 1998.

Throughout their career, Scott has accumulated a wealth of experience in journalism, technology, and strategic leadership, leveraging their expertise to advance the fields of data journalism and open data.

Scott Klein attended Clark University from 1988 to 1992 where they pursued a Bachelor's degree in English.
