Juan Alvarez

Deputy Laboratory Director for Management & Operations & COO at Idaho National Laboratory

Born in Havana, Cuba, Juan immigrated to the United States in 1974. He was raised in a suburb of Miami, Florida, and upon high school graduation, attended the University of Miami, where he majored in mathematics with an emphasis on secondary education. Upon graduation, he went on to serve in the United States Navy as a commissioned nuclear propulsion officer in the submarine fleet. After six years of service, he transitioned to the Department of Energy contractor community where he has worked for the past 28 years.

Today, Juan is an Executive Vice President with Battelle Energy Alliance, assigned to Idaho National Laboratory as Deputy Laboratory Director for Management and Operations, and Chief Operations Officer. As a corporate officer, he is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the Laboratory and for operations management. He is responsible for the development, design, operation, and improvement of the systems that create and deliver technology research, development, demonstration, and deployment.

Juan is an active member of the Idaho Falls community. He also serves as chairman of the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs,

where he has served since 2006.
