Kelly joined the Chargers in 2013 from the New York Jets, where he spent the 2012 season as a personnel scout. He spent three seasons (2009-11) as an area scout with the Indianapolis Colts and eight seasons as an area scout with the Cleveland Browns (2001-08).
Kelly began his collegiate career as a linebacker at the University of Miami in 1983 when the Hurricanes won the national championship. In 1984, he transferred to Indiana where he played until 1987, captaining the Hoosiers' 1987 Peach Bowl team. Kelly earned a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's in sports marketing and management.
After graduating, Kelly spent 12 seasons coaching before becoming a scout. He started as a defensive graduate assistant at Indiana (1989-92) before coaching the defensive line at Lake Forest College in 1993, linebackers at John Carroll University in 1994, defensive coordinator at Case Western University in 1995 and head coach at St. Viator High School in Illinois from 1996-00.
Kelly and his wife Allison have two sons, Ryan and Payton, and a daughter, Abigail.
