Mike Schreck

Vice President Of Risk Management at Mazuma Credit Union

Mike Schreck has extensive work experience in risk management, internal audit, and compliance. Mike started their career as a Staff Auditor at Citizens Bank of Jonesboro in 1986. Mike then worked as an Assistant Bank Examiner at FDIC from 1990 to 1993, where they conducted safety and soundness examinations for banks. Mike was recognized for their strong analytical and technical skills during their time at FDIC.

After that, Mike joined U.S. Central and held various positions from 2000 to 2012, including Senior Internal Auditor and Manager of Internal Audit. Mike conducted audits for a $30 billion wholesale corporate credit union and provided training on internal controls and risk management.

In 2012, they worked as VP, Internal Audit Supervisor at Dickinson Financial Corporation, where they led audits for a bank holding company and its subsidiary banks. Mike also supervised junior auditors and worked with management to develop action plans addressing internal control concerns.

From 2013 to present, Mike has been working at Mazuma Credit Union. Mike started as an Internal Auditor and implemented a new audit program. Mike then became the Director of Risk Management, overseeing enterprise risk management, compliance, internal audit, and fraud mitigation efforts. Currently, they serve as the Vice President of Risk Management, responsible for developing and overseeing all aspects of the credit union's risk management program.

In addition to their professional roles, Mike also serves as a Permanent Deacon for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, where they practice a three-fold ministry of Liturgy, Word, and Charity.

Mike Schreck completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting at Arkansas State University from 1986 to 1990. Mike obtained their CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certification from the Arkansas State Board of Public Accountancy in April 1991. Afterward, they pursued a Deacon Formation Program at St. Meinrad School of Theology from 2006 to 2011, earning the Ordained Permanent Deacon designation.

In terms of additional certifications, Mike Schreck obtained the Credit Union Enterprise Risk Management Expert (CUERME) certification from CUNA (Credit Union National Association) in October 2019. Mike is also a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), granted by the AICPA. Furthermore, they hold the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certification from ISACA.

Throughout their professional career, Mike Schreck has participated in various education programs and conferences related to credit unions. These include attending the AICPA Conference on Credit Unions in 2015, 2018, and 2021, as well as multiple eSchools organized by CUNA. Mike has completed courses and conferences covering topics such as credit union compliance, enterprise risk management, coaching conversations, regulatory compliance, young and emerging leadership, CFO conference, investment certification, business continuity, security and fraud, supervisory committee and internal audit, emotional intelligence, financial management, and managing economic and operational challenges during COVID-19.
