Lead NTS Athletic Development Coach at Munster Rugby

Cathal Murtagh has extensive work experience in the field of athletic development, strength and conditioning coaching, and sports science. Cathal most recently served as the Lead NTS Athletic Development Coach for Munster Rugby starting in July 2022. Prior to that, they held the position of Lead S&C - Senior Hurlers at Laois GAA from October 2022. From November 2020 to July 2022, Cathal worked as a Junior Academy S&C Coach for Bath Rugby. Cathal also worked as the Lead Sports Scientist for Bohemian Football Club from June 2018 to December 2020. Before that, they had a variety of roles at Leinster Rugby, including S&C Coach for U19s, Regional S&C Coach, and S&C Coach for U18s from 2017 to 2020. Cathal also served as a Physical Education Teacher and Head of Athletic Development at Newbridge College from 2017 to 2020. Cathal has prior experience as an Irish Clubs S&C Coach for the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) from 2017 to 2019. Cathal worked as a Strength & Conditioning Coach for Naas Rugby Football Club from 2016 to 2018, and as an S&C Coach for PSA Academies in 2017. Earlier in their career, Cathal served as a Performance Coach at CM Performance from 2015 to 2017.

Cathal Murtagh began their education at Newbridge College in 2005, where they did not pursue a degree or field of study. After completing their secondary education, they attended the University of Limerick in 2011 and studied Sport Science & Health for one year before transferring to Dublin City University. At Dublin City University, Cathal completed their degree in Sport Science & Health from 2012 to 2016.

In addition to their formal education, Cathal Murtagh obtained several certifications. In November 2014, they received a certification in Personal Training from the Athletic Certification and Training Commission. In June 2014, they obtained the NZRL Mini-Mods Coaching Level 1 certification from the NZ Rugby League Board. In May 2014, Cathal received the Concussions in Sport certification from the National Federation of State High School Associations and the First Aid Level 2 certification from Action For Survival Ltd. Cathal also obtained the Life Support Level 1 (CPR) certification from Action For Survival in the same month. In April 2014, they earned certifications in Human Health and Diet Nutrition from ALISON - Free Online Learning, IRB Strength & Conditioning Level 1 from the International Rugby Board, and Integrated Fitness Training (IFT) Model for Exercise Program Design from the American Council on Exercise. Additionally, in April 2009, Cathal Murtagh obtained the ECDL (European Computer Drivers Licence Certificate) from ECDL.
