As interim Chief Operating Officer of Sutter Health, Theresa Frei oversees all clinical operations, Nursing,  and Information Services.

Frei continues to serve as president and CEO of Sutter Valley Medical Foundation. Previously, she was chief operations officer at Sutter Medical Foundation, director of operations and patient safety at Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and Chief of Client and Patient Services at Sutter Physician Services.

She is a member of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) Foundation, which promotes learning and collaboration across the high-performing health systems in America. She serves as Chair of AMGA’s CEO Leadership Council and Treasurer of AMGA Foundation. She was the founding chair of the California Patient Safety Action Coalition, a statewide coalition focusing on promoting the principles of a safety culture across healthcare.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University, and an MBA from Saint Mary’s College, and has completed the California HealthCare Leadership Fellowship Program.

Theresa M. Frei

As Chief Quality and Safety Officer, Dr. Isenberg oversees the quality and safety of care provided across [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health)’s integrated healthcare network. He directs the use of error prevention tools and other high reliability strategies to keep patients and staff safe while optimizing quality outcomes. Dr. Isenberg led the clinical aspects of [Sutter](/org/sutter)’s EHR implementation at all acute care facilities and continues to oversee the use of clinical informatics to gather data, information and knowledge that will enhance patient care and improve clinicians’ experiences through systems redesign.

Dr. Isenberg, a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, is a member of the board of directors of the Hospital Quality Institute of California, and co-chairs the Healthcare committee of the [Bay Area Council](/org/bay-area-council).

Dr. Isenberg earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, and his doctorate in experimental pathology from UCSF.  Following his postdoctoral years at the Gladstone Foundation for Cardiovascular Research, he earned his medical degree at UCSF, where he also completed his OB/Gyn residency and subsequent research fellowship.

William M. Isenberg

As Sutter Health’s Chief Clinical Officer, Dr. Vial oversees all facets of the organization’s clinical operations, including clinical strategy, research and graduate medical education, quality and safety, digital patient engagement and patient experience.

Dr. Vial is a practicing cardiothoracic surgeon who has held various leadership roles in multi-specialty medical group practice and integrated healthcare delivery. From the clinical practice perspective, Dr. Vial is particularly interested in structural heart disease, focusing on minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery and catheter-based valve repair and replacement. 

Dr. Vial received his bachelor’s degree and medical doctorate from [Stanford University](/org/stanford). He earned a master’s of philosophy at Cambridge University in England, while also completing a postdoctoral fellowship in transplant immunology. He conducted his general surgical and cardiothoracic surgical training at [Stanford University](/org/stanford) Medical Center.  He has been board certified in both general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery.

Conrad M. Vial

Brian Dean is responsible for the financial operations of [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health), and oversees financial reporting, treasury, managed care, strategy and business development. He is working closely with outgoing CFO Jeff Sprague to transition responsibilities until Sprague retires in January 2021.

Brian joined [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health) in July 2020 from Memorial Hermann Health System in Texas, where he most recently served as that organization’s Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer. There he was a key strategic partner in developing transformative business models to elevate the system’s capabilities around operational excellence, care delivery and innovation, while balancing the need for cost containment and strategic growth.

He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Texas Hospital Association, Healthcare Financial Management Association, and Angel Flight Southeast Texas.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from the [University of Kentucky](/org/university-of-kentucky), an MBA from the [University of Miami](/org/university-of-miami), and a master’s in public health in health administration from the [University of Kentucky](/org/university-of-kentucky).

Brian Dean

Grace Davis is the current Vice President and Chief Public Affairs Officer at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Grace has been with the company since December of 1999 and has served in their current position since April of 2017. Prior to their work at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health), Ms. Davis was with the Intel Corporation where they held the position of Global Senior Director, Head of Public Affairs, Worldwide. In this role, they were responsible for leading Intel's Public Affairs work on a global scale. This included restructuring and building the corporation's external strategy with a portfolio of Government Affairs, Media/Press Relations, Education, Community Relations, Corporate Volunteerism, and strategic engagement with national and international business organizations.

Ms. Davis has extensive experience overseeing tax, regulatory and environmental strategies in the United States, China, Southeast Asia, Israel, Ireland, and Latin America to ensure a positive business environment. Grace has also led a global team of public affairs professionals responsible for Intel's ability to operate in site communities around the world. Grace Davis is a highly respected public figure with a wealth of experience in developing and executing strategies at both the national and international level.

As Chief of Digital Patient Experience, Dr. Albert Chan champions the [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health) network’s transformation of web and mobile healthcare services, translating advancements in digital health into positive patient experiences and electronic workflows for clinicians.

Under his leadership, [Sutter](/org/sutter) implemented My Health Online, which securely connects patients to their doctor via video visits and messaging. My Health Online provides patients with secure access to health records and allows users to check medical symptoms, schedule appointments online and view lab and test results.

Dr. Chan earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, and his bachelor's degree in biological sciences from [Stanford University](/org/stanford). He completed his residency and year as chief resident in family medicine at the San Jose Medical Center Family Practice Residency, affiliated with [Stanford University](/org/stanford) of School of Medicine. He concurrently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at [Stanford University](/org/stanford) School of Medicine in biomedical informatics, and family medicine research at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine.

Albert Chan

Phil Jackson is the current CEO of Health Plan Products at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Phil has over 15 years of experience in the IT industry, with a focus on database administration and project management. Prior to joining [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health), Jackson was a Senior DBA and Database Architect at [W.L. Gore & Associates](/org/wl-gore-associates) for five years. Phil also spent two years as a Senior Systems Analyst at [Hargray Communications](/org/hargray-communications). Jackson has a proven track record of successful IT projects and is well-respected in the industry.

Jeff Gerard is the Senior Vice President, Strategic Services and Chief Strategy Officer at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Jeff has been with the company since 1999 and has played a vital role in developing the company's strategy and long-term planning. Jeff has also been instrumental in forging partnerships with external hospitals and physician organizations. In 2020, they served on the State of California governor's COVID-19 Public Health and Medical Task Force.

Jeff Gerard attended [Stanford University](/org/stanford) for their undergraduate degree, where they studied human biology. Jeff then attended [Northwestern University](/org/northwestern-university)'s Kellogg School of Management for their MBA. Jeff's concentrations were in health care, management, marketing, and finance.

As president and CEO, Warner Thomas leads the 50,000 employees, 12,000 physicians and 2,000 advanced practice clinicians in Sutter Health’s nationally recognized integrated delivery system of hospitals, outpatient care centers, home health and hospice care, laboratory and pharmacy services, research facilities, and Sutter’s Institute for Advancing Health Equity. 

Thomas, who has over 30 years’ experience in healthcare, became president and CEO of Sutter Health in November 2022 after serving for 10 years as president and CEO of Ochsner Health, Louisiana’s largest healthcare provider, employer, and educator of medical professionals. Prior to becoming CEO, Thomas was Ochsner Health’s president and chief operating officer from 1998-2012. 

In 2014 he was appointed to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission where he continues to advise Congress on issues affecting Medicare. He is a current member of the American Hospital Association (AHA) Board of Trustees and has served as Chairman of AHA’s Health Systems Governing Council. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. 

Thomas received an undergraduate degree in accounting and computer information systems from New Hampshire College in Manchester, N.H., and his Master of Business Administration degree in 1994 from Boston University Graduate School of Management. He is also a certified public accountant.

Jeff Boone is currently a Trustee at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Jeff previously served as Chairman of the Sutter Medical Center Foundation from August 2012 to August 2020. The Foundation is a non-profit whose mission is to steward local health care philanthropy and fund new equipment, facility improvements, nursing education and enhance patient comfort, safety, services and programs that exceed the hospital's normal operating budget, providing a margin of excellence to our patients.

From October 2014 to August 2017, Jeff served as Vice President Of Engineering at [Glue Networks](/org/glue-networks), Inc. During their time there, the company developed the first intelligent automation engine and suite of networking applications for Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN) along with providing unparalleled managed services to Fortune 500 companies globally.

Prior to joining [Glue Networks](/org/glue-networks), Jeff was a Senior Partner at Integrity Global Management from August 2013 to October 2014. Jeff then served as SVP Engineering at SynapSense Corporation from January 2010 to August 2013. Before that, they were CIO at Bickmore Risk Services from November 2007 to January 2010.

Jeff Boone attended Caltech for their post-graduate education, where they studied business and technology. Jeff also holds a BS from California State University-Sacramento, where they studied computer science.

Nancy Cole is currently a trustee at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Nancy previously served on the board of Sutter Medical Foundation in Sacramento from January 2008 to December 2010.

Shahnaz Van Deventer is currently a Trustee at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Shahnaz has held various positions throughout their career, most notably Director of Business Development at Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance and Director, Sales & Marketing (Asia/Pacific) at Sabre Travel Network.

Shahnaz has been instrumental in the growth and development of the technology sector in the Sacramento region. Shahnaz has forged key relationships to build visibility, impact, and financial resources by connecting and engaging regional ecosystem of technology leaders and entrepreneurs across medical, clean energy, agricultural and software/hardware industry sectors.

At Sabre Travel Network, Shahnaz was responsible for marketing and major account management for 23 Asian airlines based in 17 countries across the Asia Pacific region. Shahnaz grew revenue by 30% over three years, from $18m to $23m. Shahnaz developed marketing and sales strategies, handled client relationships, organized international conferences, delivered sales presentations, and managed regional and headquarters relationships.

Shahnaz is a proven leader with a track record of success in building relationships, developing strategies, and executing on plans. Shahnaz is an effective communicator and has a deep understanding of the Asian market. Her experience in sales and marketing, coupled with their ability to establish operations in new markets, makes their an invaluable asset to any organization.

John Pappas is the current Chair Board of Trustees at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). John was previously the Vice President at USI from January 1996 to December 2004. Prior to that, they were a Teaching Associate at California State University from August 1994 to April 1999. There, they taught undergraduate coursework in real estate and land use affairs: RE Principles, RE Finance, RE Investment Analysis and RE Development.

Jan Rosati is a trustee at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Jan has worked as a veterinary technician for North Ogden Animal Hospital, Lancaster Pet Clinic, and Prescott Valley Pet Clinic. Jan is highly efficient and motivated, and they are proficient in office suite and multiple PMS platforms. Jan has played an integral role in supporting the gold standard of care at a 5 doctor, AAHA accredited hospital. Jan has advocated for patients' needs, via client education tools and conversations. Jan has also assisted in head to toe examinations and has anticipated doctors' needs prior to direction in order to execute ophthalmic exams, aural exams and orthopedic exams. Jan is also proficient in venipuncture, IV Catheter placement and Urine collection via U/S guided cystocentesis. In addition, they have executed diagnostic screening through in-house lab (Idexx equipment), send out lab and diagnostic imaging. Jan has also assisted in anesthetic administration and safety. Jan is fluent in patient vital parameters. Jan is well-versed in sterile technique and surgical assisting. Jan also performs dental prophy and efficiently completes full mouth dental radiographs.

Willa Seldon joined [Sutter](/org/sutter)’s board of directors in February 2021. Seldon is a partner at [The Bridgespan Group](/org/the-bridgespan-group), a global social impact consulting firm and advisor that works with leaders, philanthropists and impact investors to address society’s most important challenges and opportunities, particularly those that contribute to a more equitable and just world. She has helped launch initiatives, including Black Ambition and OneTen and has supported mobilization efforts such as the White House Council for Community Solutions. Andrew Dickinson joined the Sutter Health Board of Directors in August 2021. Andy serves as Gilead's chief financial officer, responsible for the oversight of the company’s global finance, corporate development, information technology, operations and strategy organizations. He joined Gilead in 2016, and prior to his current role served as head of the company’s corporate development and strategy group. In that role, Andy drove all of Gilead’s licensing, partnership and acquisition transactions and guided investments into new areas.

Prior to his tenure at Gilead, Andy was the global co-head of Healthcare Investment Banking at Lazard. Earlier in his career, he served as General Counsel and Vice President of Corporate Development at Myogen Inc., which was acquired by Gilead in 2006.

Becky Saeger joined the Sutter Health Board of Directors in March 2021. Saeger is a respected executive and board director with extensive experience leading and advising financial services and technology companies. She served as executive vice president, chief marketing officer for [Charles Schwab](/org/charles-schwab), and as executive vice president, marketing for Visa, leading key initiatives through pivotal years at those companies. Her previous leadership roles include senior vice president, director of account management for FCB Global in San Francisco, and senior vice president, group director for Ogilvy & Mather New York working with [American Express](/org/american-express) and [Unilever](/org/unilever).

Saeger also serves on the board of [Okta](/org/okta), a leading identity management software company, and chairs the board of ODC Dance. She previously served on the boards of E*TRADE Financial and E*TRADE Bank, Turn, E-Stamp Corporation, and Total Woman Gym and Spa. She was Chairman of the [Association of National Advertisers](/org/association-of-national-advertisers) and served on the board of the Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee.

Barry Dennis joined Sutter’s board of directors in 2020. Dennis retired from Verus Investments in 2020 after more than 40 years of institutional investment consulting. At Verus, he advised many of the firm’s largest clients, including corporate and public pension funds, endowments and foundations.

He co-founded Strategic Investment Solutions in 1994, serving as its chairman and chief executive officer prior to its merger with Verus in 2015. Previously he managed Callan Associates’ West Coast office and served as an investment officer for Continental Illinois Bank and Trust Co. of Chicago.

From 1996 to 2019, Dennis was a member of the board of directors and investment committee of the Stern Grove Festival Association, America’s longest-running free concert series.

I-Mei Hsiu, M.D., joined the Sutter board of directors in November 2020. For 20 years, Dr. Hsiu has cared for patients as a family medicine physician in the Sacramento area including work in Sutter, UC Davis and the Sacramento County Health Department.   She worked in the public and private health sectors to develop programs in patient services, clinician training, laboratory research and community outreach.  She held administrative leadership roles at the Lehigh Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania, the University of California San Francisco, and San Francisco General Hospital. 

Dr. Hsiu served as chair of the Sutter Medical Group Board, and chair of its finance, shareholder transition and philanthropy committees. She currently is a director on the Sutter Valley Board and its finance and planning committee.

Megan Vincent is a Trustee at [Sutter Health](/org/sutter-health). Megan was previously an Adult Congenital Heart Nurse Coordinator at [Stanford Health Care](/org/stanford-health-care) from December 2013 to April 2020.
