Paul Richardson Named Chief Human Resources Officer Of The Walt Disney Company, Effective July 1

Paul Richardson has been named Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer of The Walt Disney Company, effective July 1, it was announced today by Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Richardson, who is currently Senior Vice President, Human Resources for ESPN and was Disney’s first Chief Diversity Officer, will succeed longtime veteran Jayne Parker, who previously announced she is leaving the Company at the end of June after a 33-year career at Disney and will work closely with Mr. Richardson during the transition. As Chief Human Resources Officer, Mr. Richardson will report directly to Mr. Chapek and will be responsible for leading Disney’s human resources strategy, global talent acquisition, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, organizational design and cultural development, employee education and development, compensation and benefits, HR operations and technology, employee relations, and global security. “Paul Richardson is a supremely talented, strategic and personable leader with a deep passion for enriching the employee experience by championing the unique talents and perspectives of our diverse, global workforce,” Mr. Chapek said. “I can think of no one better suited than Paul to build on the incredible work of Jayne Parker, who in 12 years leading Disney’s Human Resources function has had an indelible impact on the company, fostering a culture that has attracted and developed the industry’s best creative talent and most accomplished business leaders.” “It is a tremendous honor to be named to this role, and I want to thank Bob for the amazing opportunity and Jayne for her mentorship and friendship over these many years,” Mr. Richardson said. “Our employees and Cast Members are absolutely key to Disney’s success, and their exceptional talent, ingenuity, diverse backgrounds and experiences, and deep sense of commitment even in the most trying times are truly an inspiration. I look forward to supporting them and working with our HR leaders around the world as we advance the Company’s ambitious business goals and further cement Disney’s well-earned reputation as one of the most desirable places to work.” In his current role leading human resources at ESPN, which he has held since 2007, Mr. Richardson supports 50 different business units and approximately 5,000 employees around the world. In addition to serving as a member of the ESPN Board of Directors and Executive Committee, he oversees ESPN’s Corporate Citizenship team, which is responsible for strategic community investments, cause marketing programs, collaboration with sports organizations and employee volunteerism, as well as worldwide Global Security & Facilities Operations. Mr. Richardson also served as the first chief diversity officer for The Walt Disney Company from 2011 to 2017, partnering with diversity leaders across Disney’s business segments to define and implement global D&I strategies. He launched numerous programs and initiatives, including Disney’s signature Heroes Work Here program, through which the Company has employed 10,000 veterans, and its Veterans Institute workshops for employers looking to establish their own military hiring and development programs; the Global Workplace & Women’s Initiative program; and a growth initiative targeting US Hispanics. Under his direction and leadership, ESPN has also launched several diversity initiatives including a Women’s Leadership Conference, nine Employee Resource Groups and an Executive Diversity Council. In 2019, he initiated Disney’s Black Employee & Consumer Experience, focused on increasing Black employee representation, enhancing development opportunities for Black executives, and finding ways to make the Company’s content and products even more relevant to consumers. Mr. Richardson began his career as an attorney before transitioning to the human resources field. Prior to joining ESPN, Mr. Richardson served as Executive Vice President, Global Human Resources at Universal McCann; Senior Vice President, Human Resources, for Paramount Pictures Corp.; and Vice President, Human Resources, at Bowne & Company in Los Angeles. He also spent more than 10 years at The Times Mirror Company, former parent company of the Los Angeles Times, where he held HR and legal roles and served as a key member of executive management. He received a NAMIC (National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications) Luminary Award in 2010, and CableFAX: The Magazine named him to its Most Influential Minorities in Cable list from 2010 to 2020. Mr. Richardson has served as an advisor to the California State Summer School of the Arts and as a board member of the Cable and Telecommunications Human Resources Association (CTHRA). He is currently a member of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Board of Councilors. Mr. Richardson received both a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Southern California.

The Walt Disney Company Board of Directors today announced the election of a new director: Ambassador Michael Froman, Vice Chairman and President, Strategic Growth at Mastercard. The election of Mr. Froman to the Board is effective immediately. “Given his broad experience and extraordinary career spanning both the public and private sectors, Mike brings a unique perspective that will be extremely valuable as we continue to build the future of Disney,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “In particular, his keen insights into finance, international trade, and government partnerships make him a great fit for our Board during this dynamic era of innovation and global growth.” Mr. Froman said: “The Walt Disney Company is an iconic brand that has the power to inspire generation after generation. I am honored to join the Board and share my experiences and insights to help this great company explore new opportunities around the world.” Mr. Froman was named Vice Chairman and President, Strategic Growth at Mastercard in April 2018. In this role, he is responsible for building and expanding strategic partnerships and advancing the company’s efforts to partner with governments, NGOs and other institutions to address major societal and economic issues. Mr. Froman also oversees Mastercard’s Center for Inclusive Growth, which works to ensure economic growth opportunities are extended to all segments of society. Before joining Mastercard, Mr. Froman served as US Trade Representative from 2013 to 2017, negotiating major international trade partnerships and investment opportunities on behalf of the United States. Prior to taking that post, Mr. Froman served as assistant to the President and deputy national security advisor for international economic affairs under President Barack Obama. Mr. Froman’s previous private sector experience includes several leadership positions at Citigroup, including CEO of CitiInsurance and COO of Citi’s $50 billion alternative investments business. Earlier in his career, Mr. Froman served in the Clinton administration, holding positions both at the US Department of Treasury and the White House. James Pitaro has been named President of ESPN and Co-Chair, Disney Media Networks, it was announced today by Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. Mr. Pitaro, who has served as Chairman of Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media since 2016, will report directly to Mr. Iger. “Jimmy is a talented and dedicated leader with the right strategic vision, relentless drive and passion for sports required to lead the stellar ESPN team at this incredibly dynamic time,” Mr. Iger said. “Jimmy forged his career at the intersection of technology, sports and media, and his vast experience and keen perspective will be invaluable in taking ESPN into the future. I also want to extend my utmost thanks to George Bodenheimer for serving as Acting Chair of ESPN these past few months; he is a true industry pioneer and helped make ESPN the undisputed leader in sports.” Mr. Bodenheimer will stay on through the end of the year as a consultant. “As a passionate and lifelong sports fan, I am honored to be joining the ESPN team during such a pivotal time in its storied history,” Mr. Pitaro said. “The appetite for quality sports content across platforms has never been greater, and I am looking forward to working with the talented ESPN team as we continue to redefine the future fan experience.” Mr. Pitaro’s appointment is effective immediately, and new leadership for Disney’s consumer products and interactive businesses will be named at a later date. The service will be integrated into a completely reimagined ESPN App that will serve as the all-in-one, personalized digital destination for all that ESPN offers, including scores, news, highlights and authenticated live streaming of ESPN’s eight U.S. networks. Creating transformative entertainment experiences through digital technology has been a hallmark of Mr. Pitaro’s career, from building Yahoo Sports into an industry-leading online service to leading Disney’s creation of innovative interactive products and services. At Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, Mr. Pitaro has overseen the world’s largest licensing business across toys, apparel and home goods; the world’s largest children’s publisher; the creation of branded digital and physical products, including a robust digital game slate; Disney store locations around the world; the recently launched shopDisney e-commerce platform; and the Disney Digital Network of social and digital channels that reach one of out of every three U.S. social media accounts. Mr. Pitaro previously served as president, Disney Interactive. Prior to his roles at Disney, he served as vice president and head of Yahoo Media, where he set strategy and developed and executed growth-driving initiatives for Yahoo’s media properties, including Yahoo Sports and Yahoo Music. At Yahoo Sports, he developed and maintained strong relationships in the sports industry across the leagues and agencies. Earlier in his career, Mr. Pitaro was vice president of business affairs for LAUNCH Media, Inc. and practiced law at several New York firms. The Walt Disney Company Board of Directors has elected Mary T. Barra, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors Co., as a director, effective immediately. Ms. Barra’s election brings Disney’s total board membership to 12. “Beyond being an incredibly respected leader of a major US company, Mary is recognized as an agent of change with a relentless focus on quality, safety and, most importantly, consumers,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “Her ability to adapt to a changing technological and consumer-focused landscape makes her uniquely suited for the Disney Board.” “I am honored to be associated with such an iconic organization as The Walt Disney Company,” Ms. Barra said. “Under Bob’s visionary leadership, the Disney team has continued to set the benchmark for innovation, branding and the highest levels of customer service. Under her leadership, GM is focused on strengthening its core business of building great cars, trucks and crossovers, while also working to lead the transformation of personal mobility through advanced technologies like connectivity, electrification, autonomous vehicles and car sharing. Ms. Barra has also established a strategic direction based on putting the customer at the center of everything the company does. Prior to becoming CEO, Ms. Barra served as GM’s Executive Vice President, Global Product Development, Purchasing & Supply Chain from August 2013, and as Senior Vice President, Global Product Development from February 2011. In these roles, Ms. Barra and her teams were responsible for the design, engineering and quality of GM vehicle launches worldwide. She also served as Vice President, Global Human Resources; Vice President, Global Manufacturing Engineering; Plant Manager, Detroit Hamtramck Assembly; and in several other executive engineering and staff positions. Ms. Barra began her career with GM in 1980 as a General Motors Institute (Kettering University) co-op student at the Pontiac Motor Division, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1985. She earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1990. Ms. Barra is a member of the Stanford University Board of Trustees and the Stanford GSB Advisory Council. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Economic Club; the Board of Trustees for Detroit Country Day School; and as a member of The Business Council.
